Looking back the year 2025 with gadgets I bought.
For the past few years, I've been doing this end-of-year series where I look back on the year through the gadgets I bought. I'm thinking of doing it again this year. But when I started looking back and asking myself, "Wait, what did I even buy?", I realized this might be the year I bought the fewest gadgets in quite a while. That was 2025. By the way, here's last year's article.
ここ何年か続けている年末にその年に買ったガジェットで一年を振り返るシリーズ。今年もやってみようかと。ただ記事を書くにあたって「なに買ったっけ？」って振り返ってみたら、ここ数年で一番になにも買っていないかもしれない。そんな2025年。ちなみに去年の記事はこちら。
Laser Printer
A monochrome laser printer I've only used a handful of times since buying it. Hardly used, but even after sitting idle for a long time, unlike an inkjet printer, it doesn't waste time or toner on things like nozzle cleaning, which really is convenient. I'll probably only use it a handful of times next year as well, but having it makes a huge difference in time efficiency when I actually need it.
買ってから数えるくらいしか使っていないモノクロレーザープリンター。数えるくらいしか使っていない・・・けど最後に印刷してから時間が経っていても、インクジェットプリンターと違ってノズルクリーニングだとかで無駄に時間もインクも消費しないのはやっぱり便利。たぶん来年も数えるほどしか使わないと思うけど、あるとないじゃ必要な時の時間効率が全然違う。
ScanSnap S1100
Strictly speaking, I didn't buy it, I was given it, but it's a small ScanSnap model. It looks like this model was already discontinued back in 2021. Until then, I'd been using my iPhone camera to scan receipts and such, but having a compact scanner like this is actually pretty handy. I deal with a lot of parking receipts in particular, so it got a fair amount of use this year. Paired with the monochrome laser printer I mentioned earlier, it basically works like a small copy machine too.
これは厳密に言うと買ったわけじゃなくって頂戴したものなんだけど、ScanSnap の小さいモデル。このモデルはもうすでに2021年に販売終了しているみたい。今までは iPhone のカメラで領収書とか撮影して取り込んでいたけど、あればあったで便利な小型なスキャナー。特に自分は駐車場の領収書が多いので今年は結構活躍してもらった。これと先出のレーザープリンターと合わせると、ちょっとしたコピー機みたいにもなるね。
iPhone 16
One day, I was out taking photos in Kabukicho like I always do... and just as I was about to head home, I realized my phone was gone. I actually wrote an article about it right after it happened, and that one probably captures the intensity of the moment better, so I'll just point you to that. I'd originally planned to replace my iPhone every three years, with the next upgrade scheduled for next year, but it ended up happening this year instead. And I didn't even go for the latest model, I bought last year's iPhone 16. I just couldn't find a good reason to go for the 17.
翌る日、いつものように歌舞伎町で写真を撮っていて・・・帰ろうかと思って気付くとスマホがない。当時のことはその直後に記事に書いている方が熱量高く伝わるだろうから、そっちを参照ってことで。ただ自分は iPhone を3年ごとに買い替える計画を立てていて、次に買うのは来年の予定だったのが今年になってしまった。しかも最新モデルではなく、去年モデルの iPhone 16を買った。だって17を買う理由が見出せなかったんだもん。
As I've gotten older, I've found myself buying fewer and fewer new gadgets. Back in my twenties and up through my mid-thirties, I used to buy them like crazy. Since I bought an iPhone this year, I won't be buying one next year, and I probably won't be upgrading my iPad Pro either. I might replace the Mac I use for work since it's starting to feel a bit old... but honestly, even my current Mac isn't causing me much trouble.

歳を重ねるごとに新しいガジェット類を買わなくなってきた。20代〜30代半ばくらいまでの頃はあんなに買い漁っていたのに。今年 iPhone を買ったってことは来年は買わないし、iPad Pro を買い替えることもないだろうし。仕事で使っている Mac は少し古くなってきたから買い替えるかもしれないけど・・・でも今の Mac でもそんなに困ってはいないんだよな。
