The reason why we already had a PC at home before I even entered elementary school.
Even before I entered elementary school, we already had a PC at home (an NEC PC-9801VX). This was around 1990, and compared to today's market prices, PCs back then were several times more expensive. According to my father, the full set including the main unit, monitor, printer, and so on, cost about 600,000 yen.
自分が小学校に入学する以前から、うちには PC（NEC PC-9801VX）があった。これって1990年前後の話で、当時の PC は現在の市場の相場と比較したら何倍も高価なものだったはずだ。父曰く本体、モニター、プリンターなどなどフルセットで60万円くらいしたらしい。
If we hadn't had a PC at home back then, I might not be doing the job I do today. When I was around fourth grade in elementary school, my father bought a Windows PC, and the PC-9801 became mine as a hand-me-down. Around the same time, my father made me practice touch typing, starting with typing just vowels, then consonant + vowel combinations. I think I got the hang of it in about ten days to two weeks.
この頃に自宅に PC がなかったら、自分は今の仕事をしていなかったかもしれない。この PC-9801 は自分が小学校の4年生くらいの頃に父が Windows PC を買ったことで、お下がりとして完全に自分のものになった。同じような時期に父にタッチタイピングの練習をさせられたが、最初は母音を打つ練習、次に子音＋母音を打つ練習としていって、たぶん全体でも10日とか二週間くらいでできるようになったように記憶している。

So, why did we even have such an expensive PC at home back then? My father is a doctor, and apparently there was a lot of sales activity targeting doctors at the time. He said he bought it on a three-year loan. I guess his high social credibility also made it easier to get approved for the loan.
And personally, I think family background might have played a part too.
さて、そんな当時としてはかなり高価な PC がうちにあった理由だ。父は医師をしているんだけど、曰く当時医師界隈にその手の営業が結構あったっぽくて、3年ローンとかで買ったらしい。ちなみにローンに関しても社会的信用が高くて通りやすいってのもあるんだろうな。
あと個人的には家系もあるかなーって思う。
My grandfather on my father's side once bought a calculator that cost still around 500,000 yen at the time, and later, when I was in elementary school, he even started using a PC. I think he just had a natural curiosity and sensitivity toward new technology. He must have been over 70 years old back then. Even thinking about it in today's context, isn't it pretty amazing to suddenly start using a PC at that age, having never touched one before?
Maybe I'm the one who inherited and concentrated all that curiosity for tech info myself. I find it interesting how these preferences have been passed down through three generations, my grandfather, my father, and then me.

父方の祖父は電卓が当時の値段でも50万円とかするのに買っていたり、自分が小学生くらいの頃に PC を使い出したりと新しいテクノロジーに対して興味を持つ感性を持っている、みたいな部分があるんじゃないかなって思う。たぶん当時の祖父は70歳を超えるくらいの年齢だったと思う。今の時代で考えても、70歳でそれまで使ってこなかった PC をいきなり使い出すって結構すごくない？って。
そのテック分野での興味とかを超濃縮して受け継いだのが自分、なのかもしれない。そうやって先祖、父、自分と3代に渡って嗜好が受け継がれてきてるっておもしろいねぇと思ったりするわけです。
