Childhood memories, writing, and revising.
As I wrote in a recent article, by the time I was in around third or fourth grade in elementary school, I was already able to touch type well enough to freely write on a PC, and compared to handwriting, it let me cut down the time it took to write by a huge margin. But I was still just a grade schooler, and of course, things like essays couldn't be submitted as printouts from a PC. This time, I want to talk about that era.
先日書いた記事にも書いた通り、小学校の3年生とか4年生くらいの頃には PC で自由自在に文章を書けるくらいにはタッチタイピングができたし、手書きで文章を書くのに比べて圧倒的に書くための時間を縮めることができていた。ただまだ小学生。作文とかの類を PC からプリントアウトしたものを提出するなんてことは認められない。今回はそんな時代の話。
In 2025, it's pretty rare for adults to be in situations where they actually have to handwrite something. Sure, you might still handwrite things like your address, name, or phone number, but as for writing a full piece of "text", that rarely happens unless you keep a diary or something.
Back in my childhood days, I was told by my father to use the PC in a particular way. First, I would write a draft on the computer, then revise and refine it directly on the screen. Once the text was complete, the idea was to copy it out by hand onto manuscript paper or whatever format had been specified. When revising, I often cut and pasted text or even rewrote entire passages, so it made perfect sense to do the editing on the PC.
Ever since I heard that, whenever I had an essay assignment, I would automatically start by writing it on a PC.
2025年の現在、特に大人の世界で手書きで文章を書くことが求められる場面ってそうそうないと思う。自分の住所、氏名、電話番号なんかは手書きで書くこともあるだろうけど、まとまった "文章" を手書きで書く場面って、日記でもつけていないとなかなかない。
さて、そんな少年時代、当時の PC の使い方として父からこんなことを聞かされた。草稿的なものを PC で書いて、それを PC 上で推敲していく。そして PC 上で文章が完成したら、それを原稿用紙なり指定のフォーマットに手書きする、って感じのことだ。自分の書いた文章を推敲する時はテキストを切ったり貼ったり、時には文脈ごと丸っと書き換えたりもするから、PC 上で推敲するのは理にかなっているって話だ。
この話を聞いてから、作文の課題とかあった時には、まずは PC で書き出す、ってのが勝手に身についていった。
This method continued until around high school. By the time I entered university, the final step, handwriting the finished text, disappeared. In the early 2000s, once I became a university student, I could finally start submitting reports and assignments as digital files written on a PC. That was exactly the way I had always wanted, so I naturally adapted to it without any trouble.
Still, some class reports had to be handwritten for some reason... I'm not sure why. I still don't really understand why. Maybe back then it wasn't essential for individual students to own a PC (which is why shared computers were available in a couple of places on campus), so maybe that had something to do with it.
この手法は高校生くらいまで続いた。大学生になるとこの手法の最後の部分、清書として手書きする部分がなくなった。2000年代初頭、大学生になってやっとレポートなどは PC で書いたデータを提出するようになっていったからだ。それは自分が一番望んでいたやり方だったから、すごく自然にそっちのやり方に馴染むことができた。
それでもいくつかの授業のレポートは、なぜか手書きを求められたりもしたんだけど・・・なんでだったんだろう。未だに理由がよくわからない。もしかしたら当時は個人で PC を持つことが必須ではなかった（だから共用の PC が学内のいろんなところにあった）から、そういうことも関係していたのかな。
Lastly, the articles I write here are also basically proofread a bit, but typos still slip through. I don't do that kind of super serious proofreading that feels like a spot-the-difference game, just a loose check to make sure the sentences and context aren't falling apart.
So if you happen to spot any typos, please just look the other way with a bit of kindness and forgive me.
最後に。ここで書いている記事も基本的にはある程度は推敲しているんだけど、それでも誤字脱字が発生してしまう。そんなガチに間違い探しみたいな推敲はしていないから。ゆるーく、文章とか文脈が崩壊していないよな？みたいなレベルの推敲。
ということで、誤字脱字を見かけても生温かい目で見てやって許してください。
