OSnine meets the real Osaka font which really used to be used in Classic Mac OS.
On the process of developing OSnine, I needed dot fonts to reproduce an atmosphere of 90s to early 2000s, but I couldn't find out web fonts of the real fonts which really used to be used in classic Mac OS, so I used some alternative fonts instead so far. Now, I ended up to be able to install bitmap edition of Osaka font which really used to be used in the Mac OS those days, converting to web fonts by myself.
OSnine を開発する過程で90年代〜2000年代初頭の雰囲気を再現するためにドットフォントが必要だった。ただクラシック Mac OS で実際に使われていたフォントのウェブフォントを見つけることができなかったから、今までは代替フォントを使っていた。今回、遂に当時の Mac OS で使われていたビットマップフォント版の Osaka をウェブフォントに加工して、OSnine に導入することができた。
Making outline font files from bitmap fonts.
When Osaka was used in the classic Mac OS, it had not only outline fonts but also bitmap fonts in sizes of 9pt, 10pt, 12pt, 14pt, 18pt, and 24pt. So, I could include all sizes in a single font file with regular fonts. However, in modern OS, bitmap fonts are ignored, so I had to convert those bitmap fonts into outline fonts for each sizes. The most challenging part was to research how to perform this entire series of tasks. Even if once I tried, it failed a lot of times in addition. But well, after trying various things, I managed to establish the whole flow, and the project to convert bitmap fonts into outline fonts was completed.
Osaka がクラシック Mac OS で使われていた当時、Osaka にはアウトライン化されたフォントだけでなく、9pt、10pt、12pt、14pt、18pt、24pt でそれぞれにビットマップフォントを持っていた。で、通常のフォントなら当然全てのサイズを1つのフォントファイルとしてしまえばいいんだけど、現代の OS だとビットマップフォントって無視されてしまうから、そのビットマップフォントをサイズごとにアウトライン化したフォントに変換しないといけない。この作業のやり方を調べるのが一番大変だった。やってみても正しくできないことも多々あったし。でもまあいろいろ試していく中でなんとか一連のフローを確立できてビットマップフォントのアウトラインフォント化計画も完了。
Tuning.
It's not finished just convering the fonts. I needed to install them to OSnine itself. It was also quite a challenge to integrate the created Osaka fonts into OSnine to make each of them look nice. The baseline and various other aspects were different between the alternative fonts I had used and the web fonts I made this time. It was a series of mundane tasks, but well, creating what I want often involves a series of these small details.

フォントを作るだけで終わりじゃない。それを OSnine に組み込まなきゃ行けない。作った Osaka フォントが綺麗に見えるように OSnine に組み込むのもまた一苦労だった。今まで使っていた代替フォントと今回作ったウェブフォントじゃベースラインとかいろいろ違うから。地味な作業の連続だったけど、まあ作りたいものを作るってそういう細かいことの連続だからね。
