The combination of a Leica M-P Typ 240 with a 50mm lens and the Q with a 28mm is just too much fun for family trips.
For the past few years, I've been bringing cameras along on the family trips I take a few times a year with my dad and my brother's family. Two Leicas. The Leica M-P Typ 240 and the first-generation Q. I use a 50mm lens on the M-P, and the Q comes with its 28mm lens. As the old saying goes, if you're carrying two cameras, the second one should have a lens with either double or half the focal length of the first.
ここ数年、毎年数回行く父と弟家族との家族旅行には毎回カメラを持ち込んでいる。2台のライカ。Leica M-P Typ 240 と初代の Q。M-P には 50mm のレンズを付けていて、Q には 28mm のレンズが付いている。昔の人はよく言ったもんだ、2台のカメラを持つなら片方の画角に対して倍 or 半分の画角のレンズを2台目として使うべきだと。
I personally love the photos of my dad playing around with my nephews. There's no calculation in them, no hidden agenda. It's just my dad and my nephews, simply enjoying the moment together. And since I can't just put their faces online, those photos stay only with me and my family, but in every one of them, they've got such great expressions.
父と甥っ子たちが戯れあっている写真が個人的には好きだ。そこにはなんの打算もない。誰の思惑もない。ただただその瞬間を楽しんでいる父と甥っ子たちが写っている。そして顔をオンラインで晒すわけにもいかないので、そういう撮った写真は自分の手元と家族の手元にしかないんだけど、どれもこれもいい顔で写っている。
With a 50mm lens, we can capture photos with a certain impact, but the angle is too narrow for group shots. For that, 28mm is just right. And when asking someone to take a photo at a ryokan, it's hard with the M-type Leica since it has no autofocus.
The Q with its 28mm lens. On our recent trip, there wasn't anyone around to take our group photo, so I just looked around for a spot where I could set the camera down and still get the right framing. My dad said, "We should bring a light tripod next time.". Yeah, he's right. Normally I've never really needed a tripod, but maybe this is a good chance to pick up a lightweight one I can easily bring along on trips.
50mm だとある意味で迫力のある写真は撮れるんだけど、集合写真とかを撮るには画角が狭すぎる。集合写真を撮るなら 28mm がちょうどいい。あと旅館で撮ってもらう時は 50mm の方のカメラ、M型ライカは AF ないから撮影をお願いするのも難しい。
28mm のレンズを纏った Q。先日の旅行の時は集合写真を撮ってくれる人がいなくて、とりあえずカメラを置けて画角が確保できるところをなんとか探した。父曰く『今度は軽い三脚持ってきた方がいいね』と。確かに。普段は三脚なんて必要な場面がなかったけど、これを機会に手軽に旅行に持って行けるのを買いますか。
At the end. This photo was actually taken by my nephew, as I mentioned when I first posted the article. I'm pretty sure it was the older one. Unlike the M-P, the Q has autofocus, which is totally standard these days. That means my nephew can take photos with it too, and I can even use it when I'm drunk and don't feel like bothering to nail the focus myself.
最後に。この写真は記事を書いた当時にも書いているけど、甥っ子が撮ってくれた一枚。上の子の方だったかな。M-P と違って今時では至極当然な AF が搭載されている Q なら甥っ子にも写真が撮れるし、自分も酔っ払っていてピントをちゃんと合わせるのが面倒な時にも撮れる。
For now, I think I'll look for a light and portable tripod before the next trip. Something small enough to fit in the travel bag I always bring along, and not too heavy. Since I'll be using it with the Leica Q, it doesn't need to be sturdy enough for really heavy cameras and lenses.

とりあえず次回の旅行までに軽くて持ち運びやすい三脚なんかを探してみようかと思います。いつも旅行の時に使っている旅行用カバンの中に入る大きさで重くないのがいいな。載せるのは Leica Q なんで、そんなに重量級のカメラとレンズに耐えられるようなものではなくていいから。
