These days, I pretty much can't see anything up close without my reading glasses.
I think it was about a year ago that I first started feeling like I might be getting presbyopia. Up until then, I just found it a bit hard to see when writing notes up close, but earlier this year I got reading glasses and thought, "Wow, I can see so clearly now!" Still, since I also use regular prescription glasses, it all gets a bit complicated.
老眼か？と感じ出したのは1年くらいだったと思う。それまで手元でメモとか書いていたりする時は特に見づらいなーって思っていたんだけど、今年になって老眼鏡を作って「めちゃくちゃよく見えるぞ！」と。ただ普通の度付きのメガネも併用しているせいでいろいろややこしい。
The other day, I almost drove with my reading glasses on. As soon as I sat in the driver's seat, everything in front of me looked blurry and I suddenly realized "Ah! I still have my reading glasses on!" That's dangerous.
There's a bit of a reason for this. My reading glasses, of course, make it easier to see things up close, but they also work surprisingly well when I'm looking at the screen of my Mac. So while I'm working, I quite often end up wearing my reading glasses.
この前も老眼鏡をかけたまま車を運転しそうになった。運転席に座ったら前がぼやけて見えて「あ！老眼鏡してた！」って気づいた。これは危ない。
これには少し理由があって、自分のかけている老眼鏡は手元が見やすいのは当然なんだけど、Mac の画面を見たりする時も割といい感じに見えるから、仕事中は結構高い割合で老眼鏡の方をかけていることが多い。
The glasses I usually wear actually aren't something I desperately need. These days they have prescription lenses, but they originally started out as just fashion glasses. Even without them, I can still see my Mac screen just fine.
But when it comes to reading or writing text up close, it's pretty tough without my reading glasses. I really felt that the other day when I was signing some documents at a counter. Not long ago, when I was filling out papers at a government office, they had reading glasses there and let me use them. But since sometimes they're available and sometimes they're not, I'm starting to think I should always keep my reading glasses in my bag when I go out, whether I end up using them or not.
At the very least, if I might need to handle documents while I'm out, I'll make sure to tuck my reading glasses into my bag.
普段かけているメガネはかけていなくても実はそれほど大きく困ることはない。今でこそ度が入ったレンズを入れているけど、元々は伊達メガネだったくらいだし。メガネをかけていなくても普通に Mac の画面とかも見えているし。
ただ近い場所の文字を読み書きするのに老眼鏡なしは結構キツい。それを強く実感したのは先日某窓口で書類にサインしていた時。ちょっと前に役所の窓口で書類を書いていた時には老眼鏡が置いてあって、それを使わせてもらった。でも、老眼鏡が置いてある場合もあればないこともあるって考えると、老眼鏡はかけるかけないに関係なく、外出時はカバンに入れて持ち歩くべきなのかなーと。
少なくとも出先で書類に触れる可能性がある場合はカバンに老眼鏡を忍ばせていこうと思います。
